The Black Java

The Black Java

The first reference to the Black Java was around 1800. The Java is considered to be one of the oldest breeds of American Poultry. Meaning they are of American origin and note as their name implies from the exotic island of Java. They are big birds, with roosters wieghing about 10-12 pounds. Hens are good layers most of the year. They are broody and make nice mothers to their young. Black Java's are some of the calmest and docile of all the big chicken breeds. They will do well in a free ranged environment but, also stand confinement very well.
